In Loving Memory of my In Loving Memory of my Daughter Vanessa L ia Vecchio My precious Calabrisella Butterfly, January 29th marks the 9th anniversary of your climb up the stairway to heaven. An unfathomable nine years without you. This past summer I was inspired to make a ’Vanessa Pilgrimage’ following your travels to your favorite places in Calabria. For two summers you met new friends and partied on the beaches; explored the villages of your grandparents; immersed yourself in the Italian culture of sie stas, cheap wine and pasta; and proudly sharpened your language skills in the process. You immediately gave me an exhilarating welcome: as my taxi entered the first stop in Pria a Mare, your song ‘Soul Sister’ plays on the Italian radio station! (This song also unexpectedly played while I was getting my first butterfly tattoo.) Your strong spirit continued to give me signs of your presence with butterflies at every turn. It was during this journey where you helped loosen the chains of grief that has devastated me since the day you left. For five years I was unable to function, unable to socialize, unable to even drive. Then I find myself alone, driving a rented alfa Romeo 800 mils in two weeks, travelling from Cleto, Grimaldi, Tropea all the way to Sicily! You were there, my Vanessa. You were with me every step, every mile, every minute. I could not have made that trip without you. I felt your spirit, your protection, your love. I felt my grief loosening, my heart healing. And so, I thank you, Vanessaceda. I honor you. I miss you. I love you 5X5X5. Always and Forever your loving mom.
